Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE CALIFORNIA CASH FOR APPLIANCE REBATE PROGRAM?
The federal government is providing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA / stimulus program) funds to augment existing appliance rebate programs. California has been allocated $35.2 million in ARRA funds by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in this program. The California Energy Commission is administering the California Cash For Appliances Program and will provide rebates to consumers who replace and recycle their existing appliances with a new eligible, energy-efficient model.

WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM START? HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The program begins on Earth Day, April 22, 2010, and continues through May 23, 2010. Rebates are first-come, first-serve and will be processed as received until funds are depleted. Rebate applications must be postmarked by June 25, 2010. For program updates, sign up on the Cash for Appliances list-serve at: www.Cash4Appliances.org/consumers/listserver.html

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN THESE REBATES ARE AVAILABLE?
Retailers will be providing information in stores for those appliances that are eligible under this program. The California Cash For Appliances website will have all the information available on the rebate program. You are also encouraged to sign up for the California Cash for Appliance ListServe at www.Cash4Appliances.org/consumers/listserver.html to receive the most current updates about the rebate program.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR REBATES?
The rebate applicant must be a California residential consumer and must purchase an eligible appliance that meets the state's efficiency requirements. The purchased appliance must replace an existing, working appliance. The existing, working appliance must be recycled with a California Certified Recycler.

WHAT APPLIANCES ARE ELIGIBLE AND HOW MUCH ARE THE REBATES?

  • Refrigerators - $200
  • Clothes Washers -$100
  • Room Air Conditioners - up to $50

The lists of eligible appliance models are available at www.cash4appliances.org/products/ The Energy Commission is using the list of "pre-screened" appliances from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to identify the California eligible appliances. Eligible appliances must also be certified to the Energy Commission as meeting California's Title 20 Appliance Efficiency Regulations as required by state law.

CAN REBATES BE AWARDED RETROACTIVELY FOR PURCHASES ALREADY MADE?
No. Rebates will only be given to eligible California residential consumers for eligible appliances purchased during the rebate period, which begins on April 22, 2010, through May 23, 2010. Rebate claims must be postmarked by June 25, 2010.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO SEND IN MY REBATE CLAIM?
Remember this program is first-come, first serve and rebate applications must be postmarked by June 25, 2010.

DO I HAVE TO TURN IN OR RECYCLE MY OLD APPLIANCE?
Yes. And recycling is always a good idea for energy savings, whether it's required or not. The California Cash for Appliances rebate program requires that appliances are replaced and recycled by a California Certified Recycler. Recycling services will also be provided by Platinum Partner retailers, utility-buy back programs, and your city or county governments who have certified that the appliances will be recycled through a California Certified Recycler.

DO I HAVE TO RECYCLE THE OLD APPLIANCES?
Yes. You will be required to show proof of recycling with the
signature of a certified recycler prior to submission of rebate.
Some retailers will remove and recycle the older appliance for free including the program's "Platinum Partners." Other retailers may charge a small fee to haul away and recycle an appliance. Other retailers may not offer any hauling or recycling, and the consumer is responsible to take the appliance to their nearest certified recycler and obtain the proper sign-off on the recycling form. A list of these California certified recyclers and certified drop off centers is available at: www.Cash4Appliances.org/consumers/recycle.html.

WHO ARE THE CERTIFIED RECYCLERS? WHAT WILL THEY RECYCLE?
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control maintains a list of certified recyclers that handle the existing inefficient appliances. The list is available at www.Cash4Appliances.org/consumers/recycle.html. Recycled refrigerators must have the refrigerant, insulation, plastic parts, and metal removed and recycled. Room air conditioners must have refrigerant recycled. Clothes washing machines will be broken apart and metal and plastic parts recycled.

HOW SOON AFTER I SEND IN A REBATE CLAIM BEFORE I RECEIVE MY CHECK?
Between four to six weeks if the rebate claim is complete. A complete claim contains the filled out and signed rebate claim form with appliance serial number, certificate of recycled appliance, a copy of utility bill (to verify California residential address), and a copy of the sales receipt.

IS THERE A WAY TO SEE HOW MUCH TOTAL MONEY HAS BEEN REBATED?
Yes. The Energy Commission hopes to post frequent updates on the amount of money remaining in the fund. The rebate processing center will be sending that data to the Energy Commission and they will post the information on the Cash For Appliances website.

CAN I COMBINE OTHER REBATES ON A SINGLE APPLIANCE?
Yes. The California Cash For Appliances rebates can be combined with other manufacturer, retailer, or utility company rebates.

WHERE CAN I GET INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER REBATES AVAILABLE IN MY COMMUNITY?
Check out the Flex Your Power website rebate locator tool for other currently available rebates and the Energy StarĀ® website for efficient appliances, lighting, heating and cooling, energy audits, and more.

WILL THIS PROGRAM CONTINUE?
